Never being one to hide my opinions...

One of the issues being hotly debated during the budget negotiations is the open use of the exercise room. Currently there is a fee for the use of the room. It is not part of the “all inclusive” package for residents. I believe it needs to stay that way.
If we open this up to no fee usage there will be several problems. This is a small area that can not support a lot of people at one time. When I used to use the room there were times I had to wait for machines because others were using them, breaking my exercise routine. There were teenagers there seeing how much they could lift using the machines just for fun. I saw the door being propped open by users. Remember, this is during the time of paid access. What do you think it will be if it is no fee?
We have spent thousands of your dues dollars repairing machines with the current usage. How much more will it cost you with the additional wear and tear? The routine maintenance schedule will have to be revised upward. Something would have to be done with the shower and locker access to avoid everybody and their brother showering at your expense and using your lockers for storage. There would have to be personnel added to keep the room from becoming a place for horsing around. Staff would need to be added for additional cleaning needs.
A number being thrown out there is $10.00 in additional dues per lot to cover the added cost and lost revenue. I do not feel it is fair to ask all P.O.s to pay for another amenity that they may not be using. If we are going this route, why are we charging for RV and boat storage? Why are we asking for rental on the docks? Why are we charging for some of the rec center programs when instructors are involved?
There is no end to this. I absolutely oppose this and will continue to do so. There is a split in opinions on the issue in the finance commission and the board. I am already getting negative feedback on the idea of a no fee workout room from some now using it. They don't want to be overrun and have damaged machines.
I truly hope right prevails and the operation continues as is. Don't be surprised if at the town hall meeting Saturday there will be at least one person saying how unfair it is to charge for use. The same person who has consistently claimed the same. I know it is difficult for many to speak in public but this may be the time to make your voice heard. This is your community and you folks are paying the dues.
