A little late for Saint Patrick's Day

How many of you have wondered what "Skip to my Lou" actually means in the old song? I know some readers will not remember this song but to us older folks it is very familiar.
It seems this is an old Irish song and the word for love or lover in Irish is "LOO". Over the years in this country it was changed to "LOU" as in a name but it actually means skip to my lover. 
Well, at least I thought it was interesting.  Ken
