A litter bit of thanks...

A couple weeks ago I saw Chuck and Dawn Corso picking up litter on Candlewick Drive below the dam. Friday I saw Evelyn Brefeld on Candlewick Drive carrying a bag doing the same. I know others are also helping with this as they go for walks around Candlewick and they all deserve our thanks. Good people do good things.

Your Sunday Smile...

The florist

Joe was opening a new business, and one of his friends decided to send flowers for the occasion.
The flowers arrived and Joe read the card. It said, "Rest in Peace." Joe, enraged, called the florist to complain.
The florist replied, "Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, "Congratulations on your new location."

Nice turn-out

At times it is like pulling teeth to get people to come to meetings but it looks like the dog park rules meeting was the exception. Hopefully a good turn-out interprets into a lot of support for the park.

Let's see if this is reported on the news

Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Army General David Rodriguez, commander of the U.S. Africa Command, talks about the military's contributions in efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Rodriguez said for the first time that a few dozen U.S. troops will have direct exposure to potential Ebola patients by running testing labs in Liberia. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon's press secretary, also speaks. (Source: Bloomberg)

FTD awareness week. A terrible disease

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a group of disorders caused by progressive cell degeneration in the brain's frontal lobes (the areas behind your forehead) or its temporal lobes (the regions behind your ears).

About frontotemporal dementia

The cell damage caused by frontotemporal dementia leads to tissue shrinkage and reduced function in the brain's frontal and temporal lobes, which control planning and judgment; emotions, speaking and understanding speech; and certain types of movement.
FTD includes a range of specific disorders with different core symptoms. But there's significant symptom overlap, especially as these disorders progress. The disorders grouped under FTD fall into three broad categories (discussed below). Scientists have identified a range of microscopic brain abnormalities implicated in FTD. The overall term for the brain cell damage and tissue shrinkage associated with FTD is frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Even worse than I thought

We all have heard of the data breaches at many companies where your credit card information is accessed. I was one of those who was affected by the Home Depot breach. My Pentagon credit card was to be replaced and the current one cancelled October 8th. Pentagon told me yesterday they have extended the date of cancellation to December 4th because there are not enough plastic blanks available to replace the cards. I am asked to continually monitor my account for purchases. This is becoming so prevalent the manufacturers can't keep up with demand. Will the day return when we will once again be a cash society? With personal information so easily pilfered one has to wonder. It sure doesn't promote confidence in security systems, does it....

Volunteer appreciation dinner

Every year your board of directors hosts a dinner for all the volunteers who save your association a tremendous amount of money through their efforts. They are the backbone of our community and deserve recognition and a big "THANK YOU!" Barb Appelhans sent these pictures of the dinner. Don Parisi (board president) put the dinner together with the help of Francine from the Eagle's Nest who catered the event. The food was delicious and it was nice to get together as a group to socialize with some great people.

It's been a tough week of introspection

I have thought about this so many times. No one is truly who they seem and so many lives have tragedies few recognize. I will see a person driving a car or in a mall and think about how they continue their own life completely disconnected from those in my circle. Most of us will enter this life and exit with hardly a ripple and honestly what is the difference. In the larger scheme of things we are insignificant.

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.

An interesting thought

I heard a commentator putting a theory out there that may have some merit. We are not hearing this on the news but the spread of the virus in the story below ties in eerily closely to the timing of the distribution of all the immigrant children that have been relocated to almost every state in the nation. It is no secret many of the child immigrants streaming across our southern border by the thousands are not well and are possibly carrying disease. We may now be paying the price in another way in our country for our open border.

Parents should be on high alert for a new respiratory illness that's likely to become a national issue, according to the US Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. The disease, identified as enterovirus D68, is related to the rhinovirus and has infected more than 1,000 children in 10 states. Doctors say the illness often starts as a cold with coughing, a runny nose, and sneezing, but when wheezing begins, the disease can become very dangerous.
The illness has been spreading rapidly, likely due to the start of school, and young children and kids with asthma are especially at risk. Because of how the disease affects the respiratory system, asthmatic children are experiencing intensified symptoms that have left several affected kids in the emergency room. Experts ask parents to make sure that your child's inhaler is readily available and to prepare a plan in case an asthma attack occurs.

Finally the main pump is online

We are now back to our main pump supplying our water. As you may know, the back-up pump has been used during maintenance of the main pump and the back-up does not run through the iron filter so for some the water has been ugly. Over the last weekend the water tests came back clean so after the filter test we are back to where we should be. The system will also be flushed this coming week so there may be some temporary discoloration. It has been a long haul but finally things should be fine.

Aqua Well Update
This is an important message from Aqua Illinois sent October 3, 2014.
The Candlewick well rehabilitation project has been completed. The well has passed all required water sample tests and will be placed back in service. Aqua will begin a system-wide flushing and hydrant maintenance program on Monday, October 6th which will last approximately one (1) week. This flushing and inspection program is designed to improve water quality and ensure that fire hydrants will operate correctly when needed. During the flushing process customers may experience decreased water pressure or temporary discoloration of their water. This is not harmful. Discoloration can be eliminated by running cold water for a few minutes until it clears.
Call Aqua’s Customer Services department at 877.987.2782 for more information.

Crack filling

The special meeting Tuesday evening was for the most part to pass a resolution spending up to $40,000.00 for crack filling of our roads. This expenditure is budgeted in our reserves so it will not affect the operating budget. We will be crack filling over 100,000 linear feet to avoid water getting into the cracks and freezing during the winter. That freeze process takes a serious toll on roads and it was skipped last year so it is overdue. The cracks under one inch in width will be blown out using compressed air then sealed with a hot sealant.
