Our Public Safety department is going into a full court press to put a stop to speeders that are endangering our walkers, bike riders, and kids. Tickets are expensive as many can already attest. You will see the squads using radar in differing spots in our community. I know I have noticed them. I say good for them. We all lead hurried lives but we can not do so at the peril of others.

The flower is fading
Mom's name is Violet. It seems an appropriate name currently as I watch her fade away as with most flowers as winter approaches. The old wit and laughter has for the most part left as this insidious disease is taking it's toll.
I mentioned a couple weeks ago of the trauma putting her into an assisted living facility. Since that time things have become progressively worse, resulting in a hospital admission Sunday night then a transfer to a rehab center Tuesday.
Tuesday morning we were blessed with a short time of good lucidity, when the old spark came back into her eyes. When told of some of the things she had been saying she laughed so hard she needed a Kleenex to wipe the tears from her eyes. It was short lived. Tuesday evening she called me not knowing where she was and wanting to go home and come back some other time. She had wandered to another section of the building after being told not to even stand without assistance. She was lost but found a phone in the room she was in to call me, a number she still remembers.
Why do I write of such personal matters? Selfishly it is a catharsis to do so. I also know others in Candlewick who are going through much the same thing. We will all get through this together....we have no alternative.
Another note, I have never in my life witnessed such a rapid diminishing of finances. All these things are horribly expensive but there is no alternative. Some will read this and dismiss it. Others will understand the depth of sadness and helplessness. It affects every aspect of a person's personality when they are a family member witnessing the disease progression. My temper is ridiculously short and I know it. The situation is always on my mind and maddening.

What To Do With the Restaurant Space?
By Bonnie Marron
As many of you know by now, the Dockside Grill closed the beginning of November and many residents were sad to see it go. Now we have a rather large unutilized space in the Recreation Center and I am coming to you, the members, for suggestions on how best utilize this space as we move forward. I have been hearing ideas ranging from another restaurant, to a storage space, to a game room, to a coffee shop, and more, but I would like to hear from more of you since you will be the ones to utilize it. Don’t just say I want this - If you want a restaurant give some idea of menu items, costs, etc; If you want a game room, then what types of items would need to be included to get this off the ground. Let your imagination run free, be creative and please contact me at eithercanoe@ameritech.net or 815-765-2030 and pass your suggestions and ideas along. I look forward to hearing from you.
Gentlemen, tune up your augers
Tuesday morning at dawn I looked out at the lake and there it was, the first skim of ice. A lot of the lake was covered in the thin sheet but in looking at the weather forecast it will be gone by the weekend if not sooner. This could prove to be one heck of a good year for ice fishing since there was zero fishing pressure on the lake for weeks this summer due to the algae bloom. Enjoy the winter. If we have another summer like the last one with the drought and heat it could be tough on the lake once more.
(Did you notice how thin the ice is in this picture? No way would I be on ice of that depth)

Will someone explain this to me
As seems to be so often the case, a government agency came out with some horrifying statistics according to a news report I was listening to. The agency said the fastest growing group of new HIV cases is in the 13 to 24 year age group and the majority do not know they are infected.
Can anyone explain how our government knows how many young people are infected when those infected do not know they are? Our government knows who is infected before those infected find out? Come on!!!!

A walk in the woods on the Witt Trail
The trail head by Candlewick Drive below the dam |
Wetlands view |
more wetlands |
As we approached the wetland viewing area two Whitetail Deer ran through the grass and a Red Tailed Hawk flew overhead looking for an easy meal. Rabbit fur was next to the trail where a coyote or some other predator had found food.
Rich Witt on the trail |
Abandoned railroad valley |
Another railroad view |
Some of the huge trees |
You will notice the path will have a natural canopy over much of it when the leaves come out next spring.
Now for the part that is disturbing. ATVs have already started to run on the trail, rutting it and destroying the serenity of this beautiful piece of nature. This will be corrected. Warning signs are going to be placed as well as blocking boulders. A fine of $100.00 will be assigned for damaging the trail, which is association property. We can not allow this to be ruined by uncaring riders.
The plan going forward is for three benches along the trail as well as a sign at the head of the trail, possibly more descriptive signage as well.
Rich has also carved another trail next to Oak Tree Park. Look at the end of the culvert that is near the woods for the entry point. The trail is partially next to a stream. If you decide to take the entire loop of both trails it will be about a half mile of beautiful scenery. The trail across Candlewick Drive from Oak Tree Park is marked with small orange streamers so you can easily follow it.
I hope a lot of you take a look at this for yourself. It is already very enjoyable and is going to get only better.
Thank you Rich for the tour. Ken

A Sunday consideration
“...every time you make a decision to be less than what God wants for you, you're denying yourself some of God's blessings. It's up to you. You can live a life with God's blessings, or just exist with all the consequences of choosing wrong.”

The Witt Trail
I touched on this subject earlier in my post about the board meeting actions.
Rich Witt spent countless hours clearing brush and saplings, digging, smoothing, and laying mulch making a path for all of us to enjoy. During the meeting the motion was made and unanimously passed to name the new walking trail the Witt Trail.
The picture above is not actually of the trail itself but this gives you a feel for what it looks like. The head of the trail is across from the parking area in Oak Tree Park below the dam. As you go further into the woods you will come to an old abandoned railroad line in a valley created for the purpose. Still further there is a wetland that drains into Boone Lake. The area is populated with huge Oaks, Shagbark Hickory, Maple, and many more species that in places form a canopy over the trail in the summer.
Many deer frequent the area so don't be surprised if you see one run. The trail itself is not rugged but watch your step, this is an uneven area so tripping is not out of the question.
I should have taken some pictures in the fall when I walked it while under construction. To an outdoor lover it is beautiful. I will guarantee I will have Fran there next spring.
Rich has also formed another path on the same side of the road as the dam but I have not yet walked it. Maybe if it warms up a little I will still get it done before the snow flies.
This is an example of the kind of community spirit we have here, unselfish production of something for all with no wish for recognition. The naming came as a surprise to Rich. Even Oak Tree Park now houses the replacement Oak tree through the unselfish efforts of Judy Rio. So many things happen here and most of those doing these things are the unsung heroes.
Thank you for all that so many of you do. Ken

If you missed it...Timberlane
Good for them. They are taking care of their problems on their own. Timberlane is a nice place with good, independent people that should be proud of their accomplishments. Ken
Rockford Register Star article
Rockford Register Star article
TIMBERLANE — Timberlane’s 297 households will pay an extra $150 apiece in taxes so the city can tackle road repairs within the next decade.
The Village Board approved electric and natural-gas taxes last week that go into effect Jan. 1. Those taxes will generate $43,000 in annual revenue.
Board members reasoned that residents ultimately will realize a net savings, thanks to an electrical aggregation deal approved in June that allows the village to purchase cheaper electricity and pass the savings to residents. The measure will save households about $500 a year.
“For the past several years we have been living on a shoestring income. We have no business, and the only thing we are is a community,” Trustee Ron Stelling said.
Timberlane is on track to finish 2012 with a $20,000 budget surplus, but the village allocated just $20,500 this year for equipment purchases, road and bridge repairs, and engineering work. Local property taxes and the per-capita share of state income tax revenue covers 73 percent of village spending.
Officials have identified $3 million worth of road repairs to be completed in the next decade. In addition, Timberlane will be expected to pay its $129,000 share of a $900,000 repair of a 3-square-foot hole found in the Orth Road bridge. Officials also hope to rebuild Orth Road, which would cost an additional $156,000.
Paying for those projects would largely fall to Boone County if Timberlane were to dissolve, but trustees have not discussed that option. The desire to protect themselves from encroaching development spurred Timberlane residents to incorporate the village in 1995.
“When we built these subdivisions, it was likely for controlling our own destiny. … So far, we are holding our own,” Trustee Robert Marner said.
What it’ll cost
Here’s the average cost of the new utility taxes to each household in Timberlake:
Electric: $7.42/month ($89.04/year)

Officer Tom Dawson
After the finance commission meeting Monday evening somehow the subject rolled around to "Officer Tom." The name has stuck but now it seems a lot of people have decided he needs a last name and since he likes Dawson Lake Road so well it should be Dawson. Kind of rolls off your tongue, doesn't it. I like it.
It seems almost everyone at the table had a story about Tom. He stopped Jeff Lutzow when he was jogging. Louann Gostch had to stop traffic since he wouldn't move so he wouldn't get run over, Others have seen him directing traffic and at times making turkey noises at the cars if they stop and roll the windows down. One person mentioned Officer Tom standing under a bush jumping over and over to get to berries above his head. This turned into a several minute discussion about the old fella'. He is now considered a mascot, pet,....... something.
I'm sure if he could Officer Tom Dawson would wish us all a Happy Thanksgiving and I am sure he would want to mention all the virtues of a ham dinner on Thanksgiving. He is, I am sure, quite thankful he is not being basted as you read this.
May he have many more healthy, happy Thanksgivings in Candlewick so we can all continue to enjoy his antics.
I pray all of you have a great Thanksgiving with your families as we will. Ken

More for the board meeting earlier post
I failed to mention Chuck Hart had emailed the board about the availability of more pallets as well as some oak and hickory limbs that are available to build more fish cribs for our lake. Tom Pinkowski reported to the board regarding the placement and composition of the cribs and the board recommended they proceed. Those cribs are great structure and habitat for our fish. Last year some were placed as well. Those folks are doing great things for our fishery.
I also should have mentioned one of the Naysayers evidently thinks mistakenly the Pride is breaking up because I am now posting here on the View. He obviously didn't understand my post on the Pride site when I switched over. I am sure he was deflated to learn the Pride is still alive and well as they will learn if some other plan like the failed incorporation attempt is brought forward by them. We are here and just as determined as ever to promote what is good and right for Candlewick.

Notes on the Candlewick board meeting of Tuesday, November 20
The board meeting began with the open
mic for property owners. Prior to the comments the reporter Bob
Bagleman (sp) was addressed by Bonnie Marron
and Tracy Carter regarding inaccurate
negative reporting of our meetings including mis-quotes. He was asked
to sit with those calling him in to our association. One of the
naysayers complained about Bob not being allowed to simply enter our
community. It appears they are calling him in to hear their
complaints during their moment in the sun during the public comments.
There is no problem having him here as long as his reporting is
accurate and not slanted to the views of the few naysayers in
attendance. Our community does a lot of good things and the reporting
needs to be balanced.
One of the naysayers related some
complaints about our new garbage service, most of which had already
been addressed with Roscoe disposal. The complaints to the office
have stopped so the start-up problems seem to be smoothing out.
Another of the Naysayers told me they didn't want to be called
Naysayers any more. As you can see, the name is sticking not only
here but I am hearing them called that in other conversations. The
name is a good one they once embraced when I started using it. It is
hard to shake an accurate descriptive phrase.
Jim Brefeld
asked why the garbage haulers don't pick up both sides of the street
at once rather than two trips down the street. Roscoe Disposal says
it is a safety issue, not wanting one of their drivers to get hit
going back and forth. Good question though, Jim.
Rich Devries
mentioned his disappointment with the Grill failing. He also hopes
with a new major business being built within miles of Candlewick we will find a way to promote our community to them and
possibly have new homeowners take a look at what we have to offer.
Employee service awards were handed
out to Kevin Aten and Matt
Studt for five years of service in our Public Safety
department.
The financial condition of Candlewick
is still strong. Our combined reserves and operating accounts total
$3,665,823.35 but as I always mention, reserves are for special
projects like roads and equipment replacement and the operating side
is used to run our association throughout the year. Noncollectable
debt in the amount of $1,063.72 was written off due mainly to
foreclosures and bankruptcies. Jeff Lutzow,
our treasurer, also reported to date we are to the good in the amount
of $46,876 compared to our budget so that is a good thing.
Resolutions were passed to spend a
little over $900.00 to repair two lake aerator pumps, to affirm the
rules for the upcoming board election, to replace the G.M.s
workstation for $422.98 since the current one is not repairable, have
our gym floor re-sealed for a cost of $1,250.00 which extends the
time period for a complete resanding and refinishing by three years,
and to fund the lake watershed plan at a cost projected to be $13,660
for our share of the $83,333.00 grant (more on this later). Due to
the gym resealing it will need to be closed for four or five days
after the first of the year to dry and set up.
After a legal opinion was obtained it
was decided to vote the Candlewick owned lots in the CC&R
revision tally.
Rich Witt
has spent a huge number of hours personally developing two walking
trails below the dam in the wooded area. I have walked one of the
trails and it is beautiful. Chuck Corso made the motion to have a sign calling
it the “WITT TRAIL” and the motion passed unanimously. He
deserves the recognition and the naming came as a surprise to him.
The board agreed to a new open forum
policy change. The two minute limit per speaker is proving to be too
short a period so going forward there will be a five minute time
limit per speaker with only one opportunity to speak during the open
period. There will be no gifting of minutes. Anyone wishing to speak
should sign in and they will be called in the order they signed in
until the half hour is completed. As a suggestion, speakers may want
to have their comments in writing so if the time runs out for
speakers the comments can still go to the board in written form.
As a little further comment on the
expenditure for the watershed planning, when we first were brought
this proposal I was against it because it did nothing to physically
start the lake remedial process but as further information came
forward I learned in order to apply for future grant opportunities we
would have to have a plan with solutions in order to apply for the
60/40 grants. We must move forward with upstream watershed plans or
our lake will continue to have worsening problems. Yes, we can use
alum treatments, dredging, and other short term solutions but it is
more cost effective to stop the loading from upstream in the
watershed. I do not like spending money but we must take care of our
lake at all costs or our community will pay the price in property
values as well as the general usability and aesthetics of our lake.
The lake management commission knows this and after extensive
meetings and research so does the board. This, in my opinion, must be
done and the dues will reflect that. Karl
Steiskal has been doing further research on the plan and after
speaking with a retired biologist that oversaw many Wisconsin lakes
he reported the plantings will do little to help our lake but the
watershed areas are the areas that can filter our water if handled
correctly. Comments were made commending Karl for his research.
As I always point out, these are
simply my notes from the meeting and are not official minutes. Please
watch the Candlewick Paper for the approved meeting minutes. This
report is given strictly to keep you current on community issues and
actions.

A story for the naysayers who say everything here is bad...
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"
The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.
"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.
Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.
When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is NO wolf!"
But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.
Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"
But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.
At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.
"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"
You can only cry WOLF so many times before no-one listens.

You may remember on the old Pride site
I posted some months ago about a guy on one of the message boards where I participate who had fallen from a scaffold while painting the ceiling of a church. He is a very strong Christian and considered his accident a blessing because he was able to experience everything for the "first time" again. He has posted an update of his condition so I want to share it. His mindset is amazing to me. If only I were as strong. Ken
Here is the old post..............the new one follows
Here is the old post..............the new one follows
It's all in the perception of tragedy
Just call him John. John and I have never met in person but we have "known" each other for a while through an online financial discussion group. John was painting the ceiling of a church when he fell, breaking his back and many bones. Staying alive was questionable. He is still very much an invalid but his spirit has brought him much further than was expected. He now after months can again type messages on his computer to the rest of us. What a positive attitude and what faith. His message deserves repeating. Please pray for John. John will not see this message but our prayers are with him. Ken
I am experiencing joy beyond description
I am experiencing joy beyond description
recently in a conversation with a skeptic to such a statement
I asked him if he can remember the first time he stood up
or
his first step
he scoffed and "" said of course not ""
then I kindly explained how I have just relived that type of miracle
and specifically..those milestones
almost daily
lately
for me
since the accident
being able to once again do something that following the accident
I could not do
( that includes pretty much everything )
is comparible to...doing it for the first time
and each accomplishment
considering what my prognosis was just a few months ago
is a miracle
and that I get to experience each
at the personal level
is a true blessing
==========
might I say
that having people I had never previously met
and better yet..some I have known for years
come to me and say I have inspired them..and explaining how
makes me feel
maybe... hopefully... I am fulfilling Gods plan for me
+++++++++++++
and Ken , along with so many others
again thank you much for you kind support
I will strive to continue
==============
John
This is the new post from "John"
let me tell ya something about therapy
at least here
the typical therapist here would fit in well at hooters
while in the hospital in one of my chess matches with one of the doctors
the subject came up about the attractiveness of most of the staff
I mentioned it seemed to be a motivating factor to be coached by such lovely young ladies
the doc said...results seem to verify that observation
======================
also
since you brought up therapy
I'll take this opportunity to update my status
I have across the board ,,,surpassed my prognosises after my disabling accident
and still in daily therapy and exercise
going on 9 months 5 days per week
I'm told I am in the top 13 %
in recovery for my incomplete quadriplegic status
it seems my history of hard physical labor , and high work ethics , excellent health
strong physical condition , good attitude , and strong faith
have all been great beneficial factors
in the hardest struggle of my life
=============
it is not my disability that would make it unlikely to find me in hooters
( I'm disabled ..not dead )
but rather my relationship with Jesus
If this isn't an appropriate Sunday post I don't know what is. Ken

I must commend the gentleman at the last lake management meeting because he obviously cared enough to research means of weed control for our lake rather than chemicals. He brought up a weed harvester. Researched input is always valuable.
We did own a weed harvester many years ago to do exactly as he suggested. Those of us living here at the time remember the serious problems with the method and it was finally abandoned and the harvester sold.
The equipment did cut the weeds and pick up most of them. The problem was it didn't get maybe 20% of them and those floated around the lake decaying and smelling. When they washed up on frontages it was a real mess. We had to man the harvester costing a lot of labor. The recovered weeds then were dumped in an area in a lakeside park to be hauled away costing more labor, fuel, and disposal. The harvester also harvested unfortunate fish that were in the way. I can still remember the live fish flipping in the mess. There were mechanical breakdowns and many complaints from P.O.s.
Again, I commend those willing to bring forth ideas and had we not tried it this may have been a winner.

Some pictures from the Lake management meeting
This is Joe Rush, our lake manager, explaining the grant application process and proposal at the meeting.
Joe will be the face of Candlewick if the board votes to go for the planning grant then the implementation grant later. He will be contacting adjoining landowners and other involved entities as the plan progresses.
Rebecca Olson is the grant writer and is also in charge of a lot of the planning along with Joe. Both have years of experience in lake ecology and management. Rebecca is also the lead in supplying the correct plantings for the burned areas.
Looks like both of them need to cheer up! <grin>
These are a few of the folks at the meeting last night. Lake management voted at the meeting to recommend to the board we proceed with the aforementioned processes.
