Hey! What's that in my shorts? Never mind, it's just rust.

This is a message from Aqua to customers in the Candlewick Water System.

Emergency repairs are underway for Well #2, which provides filtered water to Candlewick residents.  While we’re making these repairs, we will temporarily supply water to the community from Well #1.

Customers might experience discolored water during this period due to the higher iron content in water from Well #1. Be assured that water from Well #1 meets all EPA primary drinking water standards and is safe to drink and use. We will complete repairs to Well #2 as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call customer service at 877.987.2782.

The guys are out there

I know, I took a lousy picture.

It is impossible for the Eco Harvester to be everywhere at once but they are working to be sure our lake is presentable for the biggest celebration of the year here in Candlewick. This picture is but one of the loads of algae and weeds being hauled out not to mention the mass of snails going with it.

From Dave Syverson (Senator)

Let's discuss Brexit

It is finally hitting home. Much to the chagrin of those wishing for a one world government things are starting to change, for the better in my opinion. Even with all the news agencies assuring us Brexit was a horrible idea and would never pass and the polls showing it going down to defeat it did pass. People are fed up with immigrants flooding into their countries bringing crime, poverty, and welfare assistance needs that destroy the finances of the receiving countries. Change had to come.
Europe is seeing a mass migration from the countries to the south. Sound familiar? It sure does to me. The wall sounds better all the time. Can it be built? Who knows, but it is time to do something and our government has no will to act. We are being overrun. I think it is entirely possible regardless of how the media spins it and the polls predict it this country may see a sea change in November. I am totally fed up seeing our hard earned money being used to support illegal refugees. Illegal means criminal.
These refugees in Europe and elsewhere are not only trying to escape from wars and tyranny. Many have through social media been able to see a better way of life and intend to have it, illegal or not. I hope the people will force what our elected officials are afraid to tackle, being afraid of loosing their cash lined jobs.
Brexit was to be a financial catastrophy for the world. Really? Two days down in the market and a nice two day bounce back. Still down but certainly not as predicted. The media was chomping at the bit to let everyone know how much market value was lost but do you see the gain numbers being reported? I have not.
End of rant for today...... Ken

Weekly Public Safety report

So where is the Eco-Harvestor?

Broke a shear pin today. Nothing serious. It should be fixed by Tuesday afternoon and unless there is a problem it should be out on the lake to get us looking good for July 2nd festivities. Hang in there, it is always something.

Board meeting notes... June 21, 2016

Open forum for property owners included a P.O. unhappy about the property next door not being maintained. Another P.O. wanted to know the possibility of using their personal golf cart on the course by paying a fee. This is under consideration.

The AQUA update... Joel (from Aqua) indicates road repair will be underway shortly below the dam by their plant.

Finance Commission reports bad debt write offs in the amount of $35,681.57. Accounting adjustments total zero. Provisions are made in our budgeting to offset write offs that always occur with foreclosures and bankruptcies.
Our standing at the end of May (new fiscal year) is Operating cash of $1,774,816.69, Operating investments of $330,864.63, Reserve investments $3,648,417,56. Total investments $3,979,282.19 and Total cash of $5,754,098.88.
We are currently under budgeted expense by $14,368.42 and over revenue budget $4,471.48, meaning we are to the goodby $18,839.90 fiscal year to date.

Public Safety reports 82 citations and 206 warnings were isued during the Month of May. Many of these were lawn and property issue related.

Lake Management reports BioSwale plantings continue. Curly pond leaf is still in the lake but is being controlled and will die on it's own soon. Inlets are being monitored for blue/green algae. So far so good.

Events reports the independence Day plans are coming along with the band bookedand parade volunteers in place. Dandy Donuts is handling the food aspect.

The Rec Commission mentions circuit and line dancing, T-ball, CWL dance have been cancelled due to low turn-out. Summer Camp has 10 to 16 daily. The dog park has sold 24 tags this year. Bunco turned out 32 people. Pickleball has 4 to 5 players weekly. Bocce Ball has attendance of 2 to 5.

The Outpost planning is moving ahead with meetings planned with the three bidding architects to be sure we are on the same page before actually hiring one of them.

Savannah Oaks reports we are now into the watering season and most of this wil be contained to night and early morning hours to avoid play disruption. There is some "Red Thread" disease but it doesn't seem to be a real threat and spraying is ongoing to kill it. Trees have been fertilized and the course is playing well.

Savannah Oaks clubhouse tells us Cinci de Mayo was a big success with around 35 attendees. Twenty seven men are playing in the men's league. May 7 was the first tournament with ten teams of two. Pub Trivia drew 53 people. Memorial Day tournament had 23 players. Savannah Oaks losses are $4,544.00 larger than last year through May. Not good.

The Golf Commission is discussing the feasibility of a driving range. The course being open to the public was again addressed. Public opening was tried in the past and was not feasable due to the real estate tax expense.

Communications is working on an ad to be placed in the Daily Herald. Ad spaces will be available at the bottom. If all are sold they hope to run the ad four times per month.

The Roads commission reports the patching has been completed between AQUA and Talladega as well as the South gate. This is phase 1 of the project this year. A full length run of two inch paving from below AQUA to Talledaga is in the works as well but the bad areas had to be taken care of first to avoid problems down the road (pun intended). Roads selected for chipseal are Lamplighter Loop to Galleon Run, Galleon the Candlewick Drive, Talledaga to Hastings to Pembrook, and Staffordshire to Rochester. If the chipseal works out well this will completely change the dollar amount needed for road work going forward.

The new message board will be ordered for our front gate. Mediacom will be replacing T6 for internet service at the Rec Center. Some windows will be replaced in both gate houses due to broken seals. The truck body on our vehicle M-7 is badly rusted but the remainder of the vehicle is sound so we will be replacing the bed as budgeted. TSC is being hired to handle testing on our road repairs this year as we have in the past. A gravel box is being purchased for our Maintenance Department for use in shouldering our roads. The purchase will include staff training.
We will be changing our current ABDI server a hosted CMS server.
Our reserve study will be updated this year to handle any adjustment suggestions going forward.

A property owner addressed the board regarding the rule for vacant lot maintenance, feeling warnings should be issued prior to ticketing. The rules have been in place and published for some time and the board has made the decision to start full enforcement of the rules in order to enhance the appearance of Candlewick. Many have complained about the appearance of vacant lots as well as residences not being maintained lowering their property values. We are acting on those very valid complaints. Then citation policy is being reviewed for vacant lots.

About three weeks ago Theresa, myself, Bob Wahlberg (County board chair) and Ken Terrinoni (County administrator) met regarding the lots the county holds for unpaid taxes. I hoped the county would be willing to pay for mowing of their lots. They agreed to take the proposal to the finance commission. Unfortunately the decision is we as tax paying county residents will continue to pay for the lot maintenance from our dues. Fair? Not in my mind but also not worth a court fight. Hey, we tried.

Correspondence was received indicating the Planning and Zoning Commission is having a hearing on a special use pemit to allow Countryside Pacemaker to install video gaming equipment in Cuppa Joe. The hearing is Tuesday, July 5, 7 p.m. in the Poplar Grove Village board room.

Be sure to watch for official minutes printed in your Candlewick Paper.

More low-lifes for June

It will be interesting to watch

The old Pride site was close to 100,000 hits but I switched over to the Candlewick View site. The View is almost to roll over the 100,000. I wonder if it will go back to zero or continue.

More road repairs

AQUA will begin their phase of road repairs Wednesday, the 22nd. We will be down to one lane by their plant and yes, it will be a mess for a short time. I intend to avoid the area for a couple days during the construction. Of course storms are predicted for Wednesday so who the heck knows? Here's hopin'.  Ken

I guess we children citizens could not take the truth

What could possibly be in the calls the American people should not be allowed to hear? They are saying they have to be edited because it would be too painful for the victim's families. BULL!

Public Safety Report

Brace yourself, it begins!

This coming Wednesday and Thursday the area below the dam up to Talladega will be a mess. You can get through but expect some delay. Our South gate will also be having some major work and it needs it badly so be patient as the southbound lane will be closed for some time.
Work is to start each morning at 7:15 but it doesn't sound like the weather will be cooperating so we will see how this shakes out.

Monday and Tuesday if weather allows

Water Rescue Training

Water rescue training is to take place on our lake Wednesday, June 15 starting at 6 p.m. but set-up will be prior to that.
They will be diving near the dam, practicing on the car shell we allowed placed into our lake for this purpose some time ago. Watching is fine but we all have to stay out of their way. This is important training for the team.

46 times $25 equals $1,150

That is the cost for just the jurors that were summoned for a trial that didn't take place. Thursday I was one of those summoned. We waited for about one and one half hours only to be informed by the judge the witness in the case had taken off to Arkansas and this was the second time it had happened. A warrant has been issued and we could all leave.
Add to that the cost of the judge, the state paid defense as well as the prosecution, the four employees who waited in the jury room with us (although after the first half hour one left), the bailiff, and Lord knows who else.
Not much they could do other than not have three employees waiting with us but think of the money this cost and it is paid by the cash strapped Boone County. Sad to say the least.

A little automotive story for you

I have been going to the same shop for auto service for years. I am tempted to name it but these days I could see a suit coming. The shop just changed managers. The prior manager would tell me if there was something that really needed to be done and I would have them do it unless it was less expensive elsewhere, which sometimes was the case.
Monday I went in for an oil change and mentioned to him I need a new EGR valve, which I know costs around $130.00 in a parts store and it is on top of the engine, easy to replace (but I am too lazy to replace it myself.)
Here is what I was told I need to have done... Replace the EGR for $200.00, replace the PCV for $150.00, replace all four tires for $500 to $800 dollars, and put on all new struts and shocks for $800.00. O.K., my Michelins are fine, the alignment was just done a few months ago (he said I need that as well), the PCV valve is fine, and the steering is good with no sway. The Escape runs fine.
I wasn't born yesterday. This overselling is just sad. I told him to do none of it.
