CWL’s Biggest Party of the Year is Only Weeks Away!

$806.00 has been collected to date. This is a great start and many thanks to those who have already made a donation. We would like to surpass last years’ total of $3,736.00 to ensure a fantastic show for all. 2014 was a banner year for the CWL fireworks donations with 101 donors plus the money collected in the jars. If you have not yet donated and would like to do so there are forms available at the Admin Office and Recreation Center. All donations (for those who complete a form), names only, are being listed at the Recreation Center and will also be published in the August CWL newspaper. There are also donations jars located at the Administration Office and Recreation Center where donations are being accepted without completing a form.

These funds are added to the money CWL has budgeted for the display and are purely voluntary. However, if the fireworks are part of your holiday plans a donation would be appreciated.

All fireworks donations for the 2015 display need to be received by June 24^th!

Week Ending 6-1-15

Rescue Calls

Public Safety responded to one (1) medical call this past week. This for a battery victim. There was no transport to the hospital.

Vandalism

Damage to a mailbox in the 2000 blk. of CWD.

We have had several more instances of mailboxes being damaged in the past few days. There appears to be a group of youths doing these acts of vandalism. We are seeking your assistance. If you observe anyone touching various mailboxes when and where they should not, please call Public Safety. We will respond ASAP.

Suspicious Person / Attempted Burglary

Suspicious persons were observed attempting to enter vehicles in the 200 blk. of Marquette. Officers searched the area, locating the suspects. The suspects were on foot and immediately fled the area. The BCSO canine could not pick up a scent in this instance.

We have had two (2) other instances of youths wearing dark jeans and hoodies walking several neighborhoods.

Please remember to lock your vehicles and not leave anything of value inside the car.

Loose Dog / Barking Call

Public Safety responded to three (3) dog calls this past week. We would appreciate your cooperation in keeping your pets from barking continually.

Lake Report

During a rain/wind storm a boat came loose from its dock. This boat struck another boat, causing some minor damage. Our Lake Patrol assisted in retrieving the loose boat and returning it to the owner.

Please pay particular attention to tying up your boat(s). Wind storms do come up unexpectedly. It is always wise to be prepared.

Of coyote and fox

Yesterday my neighbor sent me an email informing me there has been a coyote in the vacant lot next to our home. A few hours later I left the driveway and about a block away a red fox was running next to the road with something in it's mouth. 

I slowed and rolled down the window. He turned and looked at me then trotted across the road in front of the car toward the lake. I still couldn't see what was in it's mouth but it was a bird or small animal. I would bet there is a den of pups somewhere near the dam for her to feed. One more reason I love it here!

I want to be sure you read this

Joe Rush, our lake biologist, wrote this article for the Candlewick Paper and I know things are easy to miss so I am posting it here. It is very informative about the filamentous algae problem we are experiencing this year. Believe me, I am every bit as irritated with this junk as the rest of you. We can no longer even fish off our dock.

I know this copied small so if it is too small a type please check it out in your paper.

Lake Management meeting. You really need to attend this one!

This is a big one folks. During budget prep for this year we included $50,000 for a used weed harvester. We all know this year the algae bloom has been horrendous.

The question has arisen... do we want to buy the harvester or would the money be better spent on an algae skimmer that can get rid of the unsightly mess in the coves before it spreads to the rest of the lake?

 Lake Management will be investigating this issue and making a recommendation to the board regarding which they feel is the correct path. We can not afford both.

Weed harvester

 There will be a lot of discussion of the material gathered on both sides of the issue plus I understand a conference call with the producer of the skimmer so bring your questions.
  Your board must make the final decision but the commission has a great deal to do with the board's decision due to their deep involvement in lake issues.
  I intend to be there and I hope you will as well. 6:30 p.m. June 9th at the Rec Center. This is a big deal. Our lake is ugly right now.

A Sunday contemplation

This stuff never ends!

Beach is closed until further notice. Due to the recent rains we have had, the e-coli levels exceed the Health Department standards.

This is not related to the Aqua Boil Water Order or the algae/weeds in the lake.

And it is already over. This was a strange one.

'The old Geezer" (a smile from Larry Ohlendorf)

An old geezer who had been a retired farmer for a long time became very bored and decided to open a medical clinic.   
He put a sign up outside that said, "Dr. Geezer's Clinic.   Get your treatment for $500.     If not cured, get back $1,000."   

Dr. "Young," who was positive that this old geezer didn't know beans about medicine,   
thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000.     So he went to Dr. Geezer's Clinic.   
This is what transpired.   
Dr. Young: "Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me?"   
Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young's mouth."   
Dr. Young: "Aaagh !! This is gasoline!"   
Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500."     

Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money.   
Dr Young: "I have lost my memory. I cannot remember anything."   
Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."   
Doctor Young:  "Oh, no, you don't. That is gasoline!"   
Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500."     

Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days.   
Dr. Young: "My eyesight has become weak. I can hardly see."   
Dr. Geezer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for that, so here's your $1000 back."   
Dr. Young: "But this is only $500!"   
Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500."   

Moral of story: Just because you're "Young" doesn't mean that you can outsmart an old "Geezer"!!!!

Week Ending 5-26-15

Rescue Calls

Public Safety responded to two (2) medical calls this past week. Two (2) Subjects were transported to the hospital.

Vandalism

Public Safety responded to a call of graffiti in one of our parks.

Damage to a home under construction was found by an Officer. This occurred twice to the same home. Graffiti was found. The investigation continues.

An unknown vehicle drove through a lawn, across a driveway and through an empty lot. NO actual monetary damage was done.

Traffic

Public Safety and emergency units responded to the area of CWD and CWB for the report of an accident of a vehicle going off road due to an unresponsive driver. This incident is suspected to have occurred due to a medical condition. Capron Rescue responded along with the BCSO.

Another traffic incident occurred when a vehicle drove across a lawn located in the 200 blk. of CWD and struck a vehicle parked in a driveway. This occurred around 4:30 am. The suspect vehicle has not been located.

Missing Person

Public Safety responded to the 2200 blk. of CWD for a missing female youth who had walked away from home. An investigation and search was conducted, the youth was located and returned to her home.

Suspicious Person

A suspicious person was observed taking photos of a residence in the 500 blk. of Bounty. Public Safety was summoned and promptly located the vehicle. The Officer met the driver, who was unidentified. BCSO was summoned. BCSO escorted suspect from the property.

Attempted Vehicle Burglary

Public Safety was dispatched to the 200 blk. of Marquette for a report of person(s) having entered a vehicle parked in a driveway. After meeting with the resident, a search was conducted whereupon our Officer located two (2) males trying to enter another vehicle on Winsap St. The suspects ran and could not be apprehended. The BCSO did use a canine during this call.

Please make sure your vehicles are locked while parked in your driveway overnight. I have warned of this on numerous occasions. We almost caught two (2) thieves again this weekend.

Noise Call

Public Safety responded to the 200 blk. of Pembroke Rd. for loud noises due to youths partying in the street, the result of a loud gathering. The revelers did not immediately cooperate with Public Safety. The BCSO was summoned. The noise abated, the party ended.

Disorderly Conduct

Public Safety responded to the Savanah Oaks golf course for a subject who was upset and refused to pay for the 2^ndpassenger in his golf party. The Public Safety Officer explained the golfer’s options, payment was made.

Domestic

Public Safety responded to a report of a domestic in the 100 blk. of Poseidon. Our Officer located the suspect of the domestic walking in the 300 blk. of Talladega. BCSO was summoned. The suspect was arrested by BCSO.

ATVs

Public Safety responded to four ATV (4) calls over the weekend. Please remember, our rules restrict the use of ATVs within the CWL community.

Lake Report

Several warnings were issued for assorted minor infractions. There were no major incidents over the Memorial Day weekend.

Bass fishermen (and women). Show off your skills

The time has come again. The 26th annual Catch and Release Bass Tournament will be held Saturday, June 6th. The tournament will run from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. Meet on the lake side of the Rec Center at 6:15 a.m. to get signed up and ready to go. I hope the weather is good and the turnout is strong. there are some real lunkers in this lake now ripe for the picking. Good luck!

A federal appeals court upheld an injunction against President Obama’s new deportation in a ruling Tuesday that marks the second major legal setback for an administration that had insisted its actions were legal.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled in favor of Texas, which had sued to stop the amnesty, on all key points, finding that Mr. Obama’s amnesty likely broke the law governing how big policies are to be written.

“The public interest favors maintenance of the injunction,” the judges wrote in the majority opinion.

Tuesday... 1 p.m... Rec Center... PICKLEBALL!

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong.  It is played indoors or outdoors on a badminton sized court.  It is played with paddles and a whiffle ball...2 players on each team.

The next games will be Tuesday, May 26th at 1 p.m. We have an indoor court set up and will provide paddles and balls.

Nothing more important today

Dear Ken,

Thank you for writing to me regarding your position on Senate Bill 1421, which amends the Public Utility Act to consolidate water and wastewater service fees. I appreciate your taking the time to be a part of the democratic process, and I am grateful for the chance to respond to you about this matter.

Water districts are experiencing increased wastewater system costs due to deteriorating infrastructure. As a result, these companies are either foregoing necessary upgrades or drastically increasing rates. Currently, infrastructure improvements are paid for by a small number of customers within a particular community where the upgrade occurs. The upgrade costs are sizable; therefore, a “rate shock” ensues when customers receive follow up billings for services. The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) and other proponents believe that by spreading infrastructure upgrade expenses across ratepayers maintenance upgrades will occur more frequently and will be more affordable for customers. In addition, the ICC supports this proposal because the commission still maintains full discretion to deny rate increases.

However, opponents of this legislation provide a valid argument. All ratepayers will inevitably experience a fee increase, even those that do not benefit directly from the improvements in the wastewater infrastructure. Therefore, I want you to know that I will give serious and deliberative consideration to your position on this issue should this or a similar proposal come before the full House for consideration in the future.

Rescue Calls

Public Safety responded to six (6) medical calls this past week. Two (2) Subjects were transported to the hospital.

Vandalism

Public Safety responded to three (3) calls for vandalism. The first was a call for graffiti on a resident’s house. The second and third were for vandalism to vehicles.

Barking Dog

Public Safety responded to two (2) calls involving animals. Both were for dogs barking.

Damage to Property

Public Safety responded to two (2) calls for damage to property. The first was for damage to mailboxes and the second was damage to a house. BCSD was also contacted for a report.

Gate Strike

Public Safety responded to two (2) calls for gate strikes. Both were investigated and cause was determined.

Lake Report

A citation for “maintaining a pier” and several warnings for boat numbers were issued this week. Numerous boat inspections were completed, several failed and were re-inspected.

There was one (1) incident of an unruly boater/fisherman. This incident was resolved. We appreciate your cooperation.
