Where does the money go?

These are the unmentioned fees that keep being quietly passed in Illinois without any noticeable publicity. The state of Illinois now charges Candlewick... meaning you.... a little over eight hundred dollars for allowing us to use our pool and beach. It is a new license fee you will pay as part of your dues each year. I guess a 66% increase in state income tax isn't coming close to covering the overspending so these type fees are being slipped in to help a little more. Nothing we can do but pay or close the pool and beach. Grit your teeth.

If you get a chance look at the lake

For the last couple days we have had a large flock of pelicans staying on your lake. Remember not long ago when the first pair showed up? They must be bringing their friends!  Ken

Investigators have a suspect — a Saudi Arabian national — in the horrific Boston Marathon bombings, The Post has learned.

Law enforcement sources said the 20-year-old suspect was under guard at an undisclosed Boston hospital.

Fox News reported that the suspect suffered severe burns.

It was not immediately clear why the man was hospitalized and whether he was injured in the attack or in his apprehension.

The man was caught less than two hours after the 2:50 p.m. bombing on the finish line of the race, in the heart of Boston.

We are supposed to forgive according to our religion but I have to tell you some of these acts make it really difficult.   Ken

Week Ending 04/14/2013

Rescue Calls

Public safety responded to the 300 block of Talladega for a report of a subject that took multiple medications.  The subject was transported for treatment.

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Pembroke for a report of a smoke detector going off.  It was determined to be a faulty smoke detector.

Residential Burglary

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of London for a report of a residential burglary in progress.  The subject was apprehended and turned over to the Sheriff’s Department and charged accordingly.

Neighbor Dispute

Public Safety responded to the 200 block of Thornhill for a report of a neighbor dispute.  The matter was resolved peacefully.

Disorderly Conduct

Public safety responded to the 100 block of Ambrose for a report of a property that was egged.

Criminal Damage

Public safety responded to the 100 block of Pembroke, 500 block of Marquette and the 100 block of Hastings for a report of mailboxes being damaged.  A suspect has been identified and the matter is under investigation.

Drugs

Public Safety was called for a report of found drug paraphernalia in Whiting Park.  The item was turned over to the Sheriff’s Department.

Candlewick archer in a tournament!

One of our very own CWL Youth Jon Harms and his Mom drove 3 hours to participate as a Guest in the Wisconsin State NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Tournament. With over 1,000 kids competing over a two day period, Jon Was not in the top ten but did an awesome job, It was his first experience for State. Jon has been participating in the Archery program for over a year now.

Instructed by Cliff Beyer, Straight Aim Archery offers classes at the Belvidere Park District, Boone County Conservation District and Candlewick Lake Community.

Way to go Jon!

Law of the Garbage Truck 

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport

We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy and I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,

so ... Love the people who treat you right.

Pray for the ones who don't .

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Hi Ken,

Just an update for the Candlewick View site.

As of today we have a total of 15 nests with 61 eggs oiled. They ranged anywhere from 3 to 7 eggs per nest and were pretty well spread out around the lake. Some not in the usual spots and some in new areas. Turnout for volunteers was pretty good today with 8.

Just think, those are 61 less geese we have to worry about. You guys are doing a great service for Candlewick.  Ken

Another archery opportunity

For those of you asking

Mom a year ago, hard to believe she is now 89.

 Mom is settling into her routine at Independence Village and now knows the times for eating and other activities pretty well. She knows which table she is assigned to for meals and gets around all right, some times using a cane and some times not. 
 The down side is still the lack of memory and confusion as well as paranoia, which is common with this illness. There is good and bad but she is making some friends and enjoying more activities so we are blessed in that respect. Please keep her in your prayers for her to have some happiness in her remaining years.  Ken

Archery May classes

Caledonia Road clean up rescheduled

Due to the wet weather and obviously muddy ditches the Caledonia Road clean up has been rescheduled to April 20th at 1 p.m. We will still meet at the west gate to get the bags and miscellaneous.  Ken

Fore!!! Golfing starts April 13 at Savannah Oaks

Warm up those clubs, golfers. April 13 will be the beginning of the Savannah Oaks season, weather permitting. It will be walking only at first until the course stabilizes from the winter and spring moisture but it is a good chance to get a jump on the regular season.

  I have a metal 6 gallon tank that is just too large for a 14 foot boat with a 9.9 outboard. I bought a new plastic one and paid more than the $35 I am asking for the metal one I am not going to use.

What this means is seniors on fixed income trying to make something on their safe CDs can forget it for some time. This will be a tough long stretch for the retired who need to preserve their nest egg.  Ken

The reality is that monetary policy is headed in the other direction. In pursuit of growth and higher employment levels, the Federal Reserve – as well as its global counterparts – are reaching for every implement in the toolbox to keep inflation above two percent. If these central banks are successful, investors would be locked into negative yields for years to come.

At least these investments are safe ways to protect principal, right? Not exactly. These low yield investments carry significant interest rate risk. While the Federal Reserve’s promises to keep rates low lead to market expectations for a zero interest rate policy to be in place well through 2015, unless these policies fail to restore economic growth, the Federal Reserve will have to increase interest rates. Because these bonds carry low yields, today a mere 0.20 percent increase in interest rates would be enough to wipe out nearly a year’s worth of income for the 10-year Treasury. A 0.30 percent increase in the Agg’s yield would do the same to investment-grade bonds. Worse still, even greater moves in interest rates would eat into investor principal.

In short, investors seeking refuge from uncertain yields and volatile markets in safe-haven bonds may be jumping out of the proverbial frying pan – and right into the fire.
