Don't be surprised

Next week some of the drainage issues will start to be addressed with this year's ditch work. If you see heavy equipment that is what they are doing. Request for bids have already been sent out for this year's roads project as well and are due back soon so that will be next. Our maintenance crew has done a lot of shoulder work in preparation so it should go smoothly this year with the prep set.

September 24th... save that date

You will remember volunteer hours count toward our cash contribution for our grant. Tuesday the 24th at 6:30 if you can make it to the rec center for the grant meeting your attendance will count toward volunteer hours. Help save our community money simply by warming a seat and you will also be in the loop about progress we are making in this endeavor to filter the runoff and clean your lake.

I know, it is probably just me

Schools in the area have been closing early this week due to "excessive heat." This has always made me scratch my head. A couple points........
Schools never used to close for heat back when this old fuddy-duddy went to school. This is a new phenomenon. Letting school out early is a serious problem with both parents working and now scrambling to find someone to watch the kids for those couple unforeseen hours. Why in the world don't the schools simply close the same way they do for a snow day and use a snow day or tack it on to the end of the school year? I realize having the kids come to school allows the schools to get the full state aid per pupil for the day even if they leave early but should that be the priority or should it be the full day of teaching?  I know my opinion.
I realize this heat wave is after Labor Day but why in the heck don't they start school after Labor Day, avoiding the almost immediate holiday, and possibly avoiding the heat of August? Common sense.

Not a big deal

Wednesday evening at 7 there will be a board workshop in the rec center. No action is taken at workshops. They are simply a forum for the board to discuss some  current issues affecting our community. There will be no public comments time and no audience input. Your board needs to have discussions in a public format when a quorum will be present and if we took the time to have long discussions on all topics during our regular board meetings they would seem never-ending. Come if you wish, it is open, but as I said there will be no votes.

Rescue Calls

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Centralia for a subject having a possible heart attack.  The subject was transported for treatment.

Battery

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Brandywine for a report of a subject who was battered by another resident.  Public Safety contacted the Boone County Sheriff’s Office who took over the investigation.

Vandalism

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Pembroke for a report of a vehicle that had eggs thrown on the vehicle.  An extra patrol was provided to the area and no suspects were located.

Public Safety responded to the 900 block of Candlewick Dr. for a vehicle that had stickers placed on it containing profanity.  No suspects were located.

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Hastings for a report of burn marks on a resident’s deck.

Neighbor Disputes

Public Safety responded to the 200 Briarcliff for a report of a subject throwing an item into the roadway to deter speeding vehicles.  Public Safety responded and determined an appropriate course of action and warned the subject for their actions.

Animal Related

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Lamplighter Loop for a report of a horse from a neighboring farm that tried to jump a fence and got hung up. Public safety contacted the Boone County Sheriff’s office after the owner of the horse could not be located.

Trespassing

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Galleon Run for a report of a subject attempting to enter Candlewick Lake who had an active order of protection prohibiting entry.  The Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the subject was denied entry.

Here is a fun fact for the entire family you might want to add to your blog.

If you look out at the crescent moon for the next few couple of nights you will see bright point of light to the right of the upper tip. Is not a star, but the planet Saturn, which is located 886 millions miles from Earth and is 95 times more massive than our planet. Makes one feel rather insignificant.

Is there a God?

Tom Pinkowski Sr. sent me this picture he took from his home. How can anyone believe such beauty is just the random coming together of particles to construct the Earth and all it contains? Anyone who has watched a blazing sunset like this one or heard the silence during freshly falling snow or gazed upon a baby must understand these are not coincidences, they are from an all powerful entity and a part of the plan. Thank you Tom for sending it and making me ponder these things for our Sunday thought.

A short trip to “God's Country”

Fran and I took a short trip to Northern Wisconsin for a much needed get-away last mid-week. It was a fun and eventful trip. You will have the questionable pleasure of viewing some of the pictures I took at
the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward. Fran was brave standing in that Musky's mouth all alone while I took the pictures from then ground.
We visited a lot of the same undeveloped spots we normally do but there were a couple new experiences. While on the Namekogan we witnessed a guy either training his hounds for a bear hunt or returning from a hunt. You should have heard the howling. We left there and when coming into Spooner from the north on Hiway K a big black bear loped across the road in front of us. Really something to see and here is the odd part, we saw none in the remote areas but this bear was on the outskirts of town about two city blocks from a school. The schoolyard is fenced with chain link and I wonder if that is why, in case of predatory animals.
Hiway 63 heading toward Hayward also held a surprise. What appeared to be hundreds of railroad oil tank cars were stored on an unused section of track end to end, some obscured by trees and some easily visible. Some of the cars were brand new and some were older. You have to wonder if this is storage of oil in case of an emergency. If they were full it was one heck of a lot of oil.
Beautiful weather and a great trip. We spent the evenings sitting by Crooked Lake enjoying the pine scented breezes.

Are you a smoker? Do you use a cell phone?

Starting January 1, 2014, if you are caught flipping a cigarette butt out the window of your car it is considered littering (which it is) and the fine is up to $1,500 for the first offense. When someone hits the third offense the fine can be $25,000.00 plus imprisonment. You know how I feel about littering but this seems a little extreme even to me. That is Illinois.

The next law does affect me. Using a cell phone in a car while driving unless it is a hands-free device is illegal in Illinois on the same date. The fine? $75.00. I have already ordered a hands-free set but this is still a pain. What do you do if the phone rings and you are not wired up? I guess you ignore it.

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Delta for a report of a subject having difficulty breathing.  The subject was transported for treatment.

Public Safety responded to the 300 block of Pembroke for a report of a subject with a knee injury.  The subject was transported for treatment.

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Squire for a subject having difficulty breathing.  The subject was transported for treatment.

Public Safety responded to the 200 block of Briarcliff for a subject who was suffering a diabetic issue and becoming combative.  The subject refused transport.

Damaged Property

Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Hastings for a report of a resident who noticed burn marks on his deck.  The matter is under investigation.

Traffic Crashes

Public Safety responded to the East gate for a report of a traffic crash.  The Boone County Sheriff’s Department responded and handled the matter.

Unwanted Subject

Public safety notified the Boone County Sheriff’s Office when a subject attempted to enter Candlewick with an active order of protection.  The subject was escorted to the property to retrieve items.

How to better sell our community

You probably noticed the article on the front page of the latest Candlewick paper asking for input regarding how to better market our community and enhance the perception of Candlewick. It brought a thought to mind.
Consider how much money is spent going north on fishing trips. Many economies are built on that premise in Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, etc. We are living on one of the premier fishing lakes in the Midwest. Candlewick Lake far surpasses the quality of fishing enjoyed in the lake we used to visit in NW Wisconsin.
We have all viewed many pictures of the huge fish coming from our lake whether it be Musky, Walleye, Bass, or even Channel Cat. Some of these pictures with guys (or gals) holding their huge trophy size catches should be all over the brochures we are producing. Sell us as a fishing destination that can be enjoyed free of charge except for a state license just by living here.
Sure, mention the parks, golf course, trails, skiing, rec center, wildlife, gated status, and all the other good reasons to make this a home but let's concentrate on our very strongest point. This can be your year-round fishing trip.
We are, after all, Candlewick Lake. If not for the lake and fishing Fran and I would not have built here.
